Photographs by David Aschkenas

Text by Abby Mendelson

Design by Ken Lawton

This brilliantly composed book contains more than 100 photographs by award-winning photographer David Aschkenas documenting the last months of Pittsburgh's Civic Arena and its subsequent demolition. Given unprecedented access to the building and environs, Aschkenas painstakingly recorded the entire year-long process. To complement the extraordinary images, award-winning writer Abby Mendelson skillfully selected and edited a spectrum of memories from Arena patrons, performers, and athletes, including former Penguin Pierre Larouche and musicians Joe Grushecky and Billy Price. A powerful introduction to the book authored by Mendelson tells the Arena’s fascinating history. Designer Ken Lawton has fashioned this memorable material into a unique and moving project for all to experience and keep as a memento of an era gone by.

If you are interested in ordering a copy of the book, you may click here to order through Apple iTunes or click here to order through Amazon.  You may also click here to directly order the paperback book.

A portion of the proceeds from the purchase of Arena: Remembering the Igloo will benefit the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation.

Pittsburgh Penguins and Giant Eagle Team Up for Diaper Drive

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Giant Eagle will team up on March 29 at Kidapaloozaat the David L. Lawrence Convention Centerand on March 30 at CONSOL Energy Center to collect diapers for the Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank.

One in three families in America struggle to afford diapers for their children and not all social assistance programs for low-income families cover the cost of diapers. Babies need between 6 - 10 diapers each day and an adequate supply of diapers can cost more than $100 each month per baby for families that are already struggling. Without a clean diaper available, some babies can spend a day or longer in one diaper, leading to potential health and abuse risks.

The Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank helps to bridge the “diaper gap” – a lack of a sufficient supply of disposable diapers to ensure babies remain clean, dry and healthy – by providing diapers for babies of families who are most in need.

On March 29, fans attending Kidapalooza at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center can join Iceburgh from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm as he collects diapers for the Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank. Fans that donate at Kidapalooza have the opportunity to win prizes from Giant Eagle and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

On March 30, wives and girlfriends of Pittsburgh Penguins players and coaches will accept donations of diapers and cash at the American Eagle gate, Trib Total Media gate and Verizon gate of CONSOL Energy Center before the Penguins-Blackhawks game. Fans who make a donation at CONSOL Energy Center will receive 15 PensPoints and an opportunity to win autographed Pens memorabilia. Each PensPoints card must be redeemed within 48 hours of the Pittsburgh Penguins Diaper Drive sponsored by Giant Eagle and only one per account will be accepted.

All donations will help the Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank continue its mission to help babies and we encourage each fan to provide an assist for the youngest and most vulnerable members of our community – our children.
