Penguins Foundation and Carnegie Science Center Highlight “Science of Hockey” School Assembly Program

The Penguins Foundation is proud to support Science of Hockey, a dynamic school assembly program developed in partnership with the Carnegie Science Center and PPG.

Designed for students in grades K–8, the 45-minute program is part of Carnegie Science Center’s Science on the Road outreach initiative and features a series of live demonstrations led by an experienced educator. Through engaging visuals and hands-on science, Science of Hockey brings STEM education to life by exploring how science and hockey intersect — from physics and geometry to physiology and materials science. Highlights of the assembly include:

  • A swinging bowling ball pendulum to illustrate Newton’s laws of motion
  • A 3D-printed Stanley Cup submerged in liquid nitrogen, demonstrating the principles of cryogenic chemistry
  • Video appearances by Penguins staff and team mascot Iceburgh, who help connect classroom concepts to real-world hockey action

Since 2021, the program has sparked curiosity and excitement among students by blending the thrill of sports with interactive learning. Whether it's understanding Bernoulli’s principle of lift or the forces of motion, Science of Hockey encourages young learners to explore the scientific principles that make the game possible.

Science of Hockey is now available for booking as a live or virtual assembly for schools, libraries, and youth organizations.
