Penguins Foundation Helps Celebrate Summer Reading with Exclusive Library Card Release

Published August 11, 2024

Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh (CLP) is wrapping up its annual Summer Reading Program with a special surprise: the debut of a limited-edition library card created in partnership with the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The exclusive card will be unveiled today during CLP’s Extravaganza—a free, family-friendly celebration held at the Library’s Main branch in Oakland.

The daylong event marks the conclusion of CLP’s “READ-A-PALOOZA BOOK BOWL” Summer Reading Program, which engaged thousands of readers in a playful, sports-themed challenge encouraging kids and adults alike to “train their brains” through books.

“After a summer of friendly competition and literary fun, we wanted to keep the momentum going,” said Andrew Medlar, President and Director of Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. “This new library card is a perfect fit for a city that’s as passionate about sports as it is about reading. Whether you read five books or fifty, every reader deserves to be celebrated.”

The Summer Reading Program’s sports-inspired theme made for a natural collaboration with the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, which shares a commitment to youth development and literacy. The new Penguins-themed card will be available to the public immediately following the unveiling at Extravaganza, and at all Carnegie Library locations starting Monday, August 12, while supplies last.

“Reading unlocks a world of imagination and knowledge that starts at an early age,” said Yvonne Maher, Executive Director of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. “We’re proud to support Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh in their mission to help young people dream big and reach their potential.”

To get a limited-edition card, visit any CLP location and register for a library card with a valid photo ID.
