Penguins Foundation Awards Scholarships to 10 Local High School Graduates

In partnership with UPMC, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation stress the value of education and honor 10 high school students by providing them a 2020 Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation Scholarship.

Recipients of the scholarship were awarded with $3,000 to use toward the school in which they will be attending in the Fall to help further their education.

Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation Scholarship recipients are as follows:

  • Aaron Zachary Berger, Pittsburgh Taylor Allderdice High School, Harvard University
  • Tyler Bindas, Woodland Hills High School, University of Pittsburgh
  • Ashley Davis, West Mifflin Area High School, University of Pittsburgh
  • Bradley Dietz, Northgate High School, California University of Pennsylvania
  • Amira Jackson, Pittsburgh CAPA 6-12, Muhlenberg College
  • Abigail Klemm, Brentwood Borough High School, Penn State Behrend
  • Marina McCutcheon, Springdale High School, Slippery Rock University
  • Cecil Price III, Barack Obama Academy of International Students, Morehouse College
  • Hayley Tate, Steel Valley Senior High School, Indiana University of Pennsylvania
  • Madison Travaglino, Pittsburgh CAPA 6-12, Penn State University

 

The scholars are eligible to an additional $2,000 for their second year of schooling, contingent on maintaining a 3.0 GPA and earning a minimum of 24 credits during their first year.

Students attending high schools within Allegheny County and Pittsburgh Public Schools, providing substantial aid to students for reduced-cost or free lunch programs per the Pennsylvania Department of Education were eligible to apply for the scholarship.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, recipients were honored with a gift from the Penguins, including Bluetooth Penguins branded headphones to assist with virtual learning and a Penguins ball cap.

The scholarship was created in 1992 and has been presented annually to high school seniors for academic excellence, extracurricular school activities and community service.  Over the past 28 years, the Penguins’ organization has awarded over $340,000 in academically-based scholarships to Pittsburgh-area high school graduates.
